Ever since I was a little girl I heard the statement “Life begins at 40”.
It is customary for younger women to just wash, dress and run out the door with little concerns about physical changes in their appearances. As you get closer to 40, you start to have a little more concern about the physical changes that occurs with aging.
Our bodies feel and look the way we treat it. What we put inside our bodies and how we treat it is displayed physically. While aging is a natural process, each person age differently and there is a reason for that.
While shopping for hair products recently I saw some older ladies in the store and one of them made a comment about being old. I approach her and asked her if she would rather die young. She started laughing and I reassured her that to age is a privilege. It is how you age that makes the difference. There are various ways that people can slow the aging process. This can be achieved by taking better care of our bodies.
I saw a sign at work and it stated
I found this statement very interesting because people take care of various things in their lives. For example, they take care of their cars by buying fuel, servicing and changing and rotating tires. Some people wash their cars so often; they polish it and take great pride in their ride. People also take pride in their homes. They clean, decorate, fix broken items, get new furniture and the list goes on. This is done to maintain a beautiful and well kept home. On the other hand, some people just refuse to take care of their bodies; but at the same time they want to look good.
Let’s look at it this way, while you can buy another car and house, you can’t get a new body or live in someone else’s body. So let’s start today by pampering your own bodies. Love yourself the same way you do your car and house.
4 Ways To Slow Aging and Look Younger.
1. Haircut Makes You Feel Younger
Shorter hair takes many years off your physical appearance, while longer hair makes you look older. This is something to consider after the age of 40 if you wear long hair. A shorter fresher look not only makes you look younger but makes you feel younger too. It is easier to handle and maintain.
2. Skin Care Makes You Look Younger
The first place where age shows is the skin. The older you get, there is reduction of collagen and elastin, which results in skin changes. Collagen makes the skin tensile and thick, but with reduction, the skin becomes thinner. Elastin makes the skin flexible and stretchable with good skin turgor; meaning it returns to its natural state after stretching. Reduction of elastin increases sagging and causes wrinkles and fine lines to start appearing in the skin.
Hyaluronic acid plays a very important role in the appearance of the skin. Hyaluronic acid is naturally produced by the body. It provides firmness, elasticity, moisturizes and softens the skins. However, the production of this important acid depletes with age.
Skincare products with hyaluronic acid are very effective in moisturizing and rejuvenating the skin. This helps to replenish and promote a younger, softer appearance. Night firming creams, skin smoothing creams and hydrating creams are available in pharmacies and beauty stores. Eucerin cream is a great skincare product because of the hyaluronic content in it.
Skin care products that moisturize the skin, especially overnight are very effective in rejuvenating and rehydrating the skin. While most women use these creams, very few are consistent with them. The use of these creams is like buying vitamins. They are consumed for the first couple days or weeks and then forgotten about. In order to receive benefits, women have to be consistent and committed to taking care of themselves to achieve the best results. Skincare cream serves no purpose on your bathroom counters; you have to apply them to your skin to receive the benefits.
3. Exercise for Healthier Body
Exercise has numerous health benefits. These include improvement of cardiovascular health; it strengthens muscles and makes the bones more tensile. Exercise relief stress and is also good for the skin. It tones and firms the muscles as well as the skin. It reduces the appearance of cellulites and the pores open during exercise as a way to remove the oils from our skin. Therefore, exercise improves collagen and makes the skin tighter and firmer.
4. Nutrition To Support Health and Youth
The concept of garbage in garbage out continues to prove itself. We are what we eat and nothing beats good nutrition. A good way to approach nutrition is to research the health benefits of what you eat. Healthy eating is a gradual practice and knowing the health benefits of food is a good way to motivate people to indulge. One of the drawbacks to healthy eating is that people don’t see immediate results. However, with consistency, the benefits will appear.
In the skin care section, I mentioned the benefits of hyaluronic acid on the skin. Even though topical products are effective, nutritional intake provides better value and a more permanent effect. Therefore, a combination of nutrition and cosmetic products will greatly enhance the appearance of the skin. When you stop eating for taste and a full stomach and start eating for the nutritional benefits, then you have adopted the principle of healthy eating.
Food rich in Hyaluronic Acid

- Brown rice
Research has shown that smoking depletes hyaluronic acid. Therefore, people who smoke are prone to more wrinkles and age faster. Most times they appear older than their age. Therefore, for smokers; it is something to think about.
